MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is an additional method of increasing importance in breast health diagnostics. It is used, for example, for a breast lump that cannot be adequately assessed using ultrasound and mammography.
MR mammography is not a substitute for early detection of breast cancer through annual mammography, except in those cases where patients have extraordinarily dense breast tissue and normal mammography is therefore severely limited in its value. In such cases, the decision to perform an MR mammography rests with the patient and the attending physician.
MR mammography can also be used to diagnose complications after breast implants (rupture of the implant, etc.). In most cases, the use of contrast media (gadolinium) is required to differentiate between healthy and diseased tissue.
The biggest advantage of MR mammography in women is that it can provide more information about the structure of the breast than ultrasound or mammography. This is because MRI does not use ionizing radiation (X-rays), but uses a magnetic field and radio waves, which can produce very detailed images of breast tissue.
You will need: Assignment (detailed brief), previous images/findings, creatinine level (can also be taken and checked at our clinic); completed questionnaire; this examination should ideally be performed between the 7th – 14th day after the onset of menstruation.
All metallic objects (including jewelry) must be taken off (magnet). You will be examined lying on your stomach in a tube with a diameter of approx. 70cm, the examination couch will be moved slightly again and again, please lie very still and follow the instructions of the staff. During the examination, loud knocking noises can be heard, which is why you will be given headphones. An emergency balloon and constant visual contact will allow you to make yourself heard at any time if needed. The examination lasts between 20 and 30 minutes.
A contrast medium will be administered to you via a vein in your arm. As this is excreted via the kidneys, you will need a current creatinine value (can also be determined by us before the examination).
These examinations are provided by Diagnoseinstitut Alsergrund GmbH. These examinations are to be paid privately and can be submitted to a supplementary insurance/private insurance.
